A longtime Madison tradition, Gallery Night, will take place Friday. Venues throughout the city will be hosting exhibitions, opening receptions, special events, demonstrations and serving refreshments.
From 5 to 9 p.m., Common Wealth Gallery, housed on the third floor of the Madison Enterprise Center, will be hosting an opening reception for “FUNctionally Unfunctional.”
The second biennial group exhibit incorporates the talents of four artists: Carolyn Benforado, Brenda Gratton, Rachel Herbsman, and Leora Saposnik. Their distinctive approaches to the fun and function of art are appreciable through their varied choices of medium.
Benforado’s use of wool felted into shapes studies the inside and outside of things. With these pieces of artwork, she examines how judgments are made from an exterior viewpoint without really seeing the interior of a being itself.
The intricacies of butterfly wings are Gratton’s focus in her pieces. Using mosaic, pastel, and lots of color, she reflects on the moment of our self-recognition of how different we are from one another, yet how similar we are at the same time.
A multimedia painter, Herbsman explores fun and function in creating abstract paintings of cityscapes, landscapes and other “scapes.”
What’s more fun than motherhood? Saposnik’s clay creations are whimsical, nostalgic and representative of the crazy adventure of being a parent.
“FUNctionally Unfunctional” will be on exhibit from Friday night until Oct. 13. The gallery will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
An afternoon closing reception is being planned for Oct. 11.
